1963年、静岡県生まれ。武蔵野美術大学造形学部彫刻学科卒業。現在、武蔵野美術大学教授、神奈川県を拠点に活動。
ベニヤ板やFRP、電気コードなど様々に素材を変えながら、彫刻の表面と不可視の内部との関係性を問う。近年は彫刻の複製の問題に着目し、時に既製品を含むカラフルなアクリル板を重ね合わせた人型のシリーズを制作、従来の彫刻の概念を覆しつつ、一貫して「彫刻とは何か」を問う。
主な展覧会・受賞に、個展「袴田京太朗　循環しないレモンイエロー」カスヤの森現代美術館(神奈川/2019)、個展「袴田京太朗展 人と煙、その他」平塚市美術館(神奈川/2014)、「ミニマル／ポストミニマル」宇都宮美術館(栃木/2013)、「色めく彫刻−よみがえる美意識」群馬県立館林美術館(2012)、第22回タカシマヤ美術賞(2012)など。

Switching between an array of materials including plywood, FRP, and electrical cord, Hakamata interrogates the relationship between the surface of a sculpture, and its invisible interior. In recent years he has focused on the issue of the duplication of sculptures, producing a series of human figures made by layering brightly-colored sheets of acrylic, occasionally including readymade items, and overturning conventional notions of sculpture, as he questions throughout exactly what constitutes sculpture.
