ピカソ、カンディンスキー、モンドリアン、クレー、デュシャンなど、近代美術の歴史は、移民＝国外退去者たちの歴史であると言ってよいほどに、膨大な数の芸術家たちが国境を超えてきました。移民性は、芸術を語るうえで、欠かすことのできない視点であったと言えるかもしれません。日本においても、藤田嗣治や国吉康雄の作品は、彼らの「移民」としてのありかたと深く関与しています。既存の制度が機能不全を起こし、国家間の力学的関係・体制が流動的に変わり、あらゆる物事の価値や境界が揺らぐ緊迫した現在の状況は、安住の場、帰るべき場所が失われた、誰もが潜在的な移民でありうる時代であると言えるのかもしれません。本シンポジウムでは、アーティストの移動が、その思考や作品様式に及ぼす影響について、あるいは、芸術における移民性とはなにかについて、本展出品作家を中心に議論を行います。

ドキュメンタリー映画『手でふれてみる世界』上映会＆トーク

手で世界にふれながら旅をし、多様な文化や芸術と出会ってきた、視覚に障害を持つアルド・グラッシーニとダニエラ・ボッテゴニ夫妻。ふたりの働きかけで1993年、イタリアのマルケ州アンコーナ県に「オメロ触覚美術館」が設立され、1999年にはイタリア議会の承認を受けて、国立の美術館となりました。本作は、近代以前の彫刻のレプリカや現代作家による実物を手でふれて鑑賞できるこの美術館の活動を紹介するドキュメンタリーです。約60分。2022年秋、ヴァンジ彫刻庭園美術館（静岡県長泉町）で初公開ののち、「障害者週間」（12月3日から9日、内閣府による設定）にあわせて、東京での上映会を行います。ゲストに小説家で早稲田大学教授の小野正嗣さんをお迎えし、本映画の岡野晃子監督と、本展出品作家でこれまでも「ふれる」展示を実践してきた彫刻家・北川太郎さんでアフター・トークも開催します。

1970年生まれ、大分県出身。小説家・フランス文学研究者・早稲田大学教授。
『水に埋もれる墓』で朝日新人文学賞、『にぎやかな湾に背負われた船』で三島由紀夫賞、『九年前の祈り』で芥川龍之介賞受賞。訳書に『アイデンティティが人を殺す』（アミン・マアルーフ）、『三人の逞しい女』（マリー・ンディアイ）がある。2018年より『日曜美術館』（NHK）にキャスターとして出演。
1973年生まれ。コロンビア大学大学院美術及び美術教育研究科修士課程修了。ヴァンジ彫刻庭園美術館にて「センス・オブ・ワンダー もうひとつの庭へ」、「すべてのひとに石がひつよう 目と、手でふれる世界」など企画。視覚にとどまらない感覚による美術館教育の可能性を研究。その一環として、ドキュメンタリー映画「手でふれてみる世界」を制作。
北川 太郎 [本展出品作家]
1976 年 兵庫県生まれ、現在、 岡山県を拠点に活動。 手仕事にこだわり、のみと石頭 (せっとう)を使い、長い時を かけて制作される石の 彫刻は、プリミティヴで生命力 にあふれ、おおらかで無垢な佇 まいが未知の感覚を 呼び覚ます。近年は、彫刻に 「触れる」鑑賞体験など、啓発 的な活動も行う。

Symposium on "migrant art/art migrants"
From Picasso to Kandinsky, Mondrian, Klee, Duchamp, and countless others, so many artists have left their homes for foreign parts that the history of modern art could be described as that of migration and exile. Migrant identity has long been an indispensable viewpoint within art discourse. In the case of Japan, the works of artists like Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita and Yasuo Kuniyoshi were profoundly influenced by their status as immigrants. In these turbulent times, with existing systems and institutions no longer fit for purpose, cross-national relationship dynamics and structures in flux, and the disruption of values and boundaries of all kinds, perhaps we are all potential migrants who have lost our safe place, our place to call home. This symposium will discuss how artists’ ideas and the style of their works are influenced by moving around, and the nature of migrant characteristics in an art context, with a focus on the artists exhibiting at this Domani.

Experiencing the World(2022)
Aldo Grassini and his wife Daniela Bottegoni are a visually-impaired couple who have used their hands to feel their way around the world, encountering a diverse range of culture and art on their travels. The pair were instrumental in the founding of the Museo Omero tactile museum in Ancona, in the Marche region of Italy, in 1993, the museum gaining public status in 1999. This 60-minute documentary showcases the activities of the museum, where replicas of pre-modern sculptures and actual works by contemporary artists can be appreciated by touch. Following its Japanese premiere at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum (Nagaizumi, Shizuoka) in the autumn of 2022, the film will be screened in Tokyo during Disability Week (December 3–9).
A post-screening talk with novelist and Waseda University professor Ono Masatsugu, joining director of the film Okano Koko, and Domani exhibiting artist Kitagawa Taro, who has also staged “tactile” exhibitions, will also be held.

Born 1970, native of Oita Prefecture. A novelist, French literature scholar, and professor at Waseda University. Received the Asahi Award for New Writers for his first novel Mizu ni umoreru haka [Graves buried in water], the Mishima Yukio Prize for his second novel Nigiyaka na wan ni seowareta fune [Echo on the Bay], and the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Award for 9 Nen Mae no Inori [A prayer nine years ago]. His translations from French include In the Name of Identity (Amin Maalouf) and Three Strong Women (Marie NDiayi). He has been a host of NHK’s Sunday Museum since 2018.Okano Koko (director of the film)
Born 1973. Master of Arts in Education, Columbia University Teachers College. Organized exhibitions including “The Sense of Wonder: Into Another Garden” and “Everybody Needs a Rock: Sensing the world through the eyes and hands” at the Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum. As an extension of her research on the possibilities of museum education through senses that go beyond the visual, she produced the documentary film Feeling the World.
Kitagawa Taro (Domani 2022–23 exhibiting artist)
Born 1976 in Hyogo Prefecture, currently based in Okayama Prefecture.
2007-2010 Program of the Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists (Cusco, Peru), Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan Kitagawa's sculptures, painstakingly crafted in stone with chisel, hammer, and a steadfast commitment to working by hand, are primitive in aesthetic and brimming with vitality; their spontaneous, artless appearance summoning hitherto unknown sensations. In recent years Kitagawa has participated in numerous exhibitions sounding a warning to today's world, taking different approaches to demonstrating the innate appeal of stone as a material. In recent years, he has also extended his practice the experience of appreciating sculptures via “touch.”

Art appreciation workshop “Touch and taste/Touch and talk”
An accessible workshop with something for everyone. Planned under the supervision of Watanabe Junji (NTT), known for his research into “touch,” participants will use their tactile senses to share what would usually be an entirely visual art appreciation experience.
