From exhibition to platform – For the “tomorrow” of Japanese artists

Half a century has now passed since Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs launched its Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists (formerly the Overseas Study Program for Artists) in 1967, with the aim of nurturing future leaders of the Japanese art world by funding young artists to study at relevant institutions in other countries. In the domain of fine arts, more than 1400 individuals have ventured overseas under the program, and the “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition, inaugurated in 1998 and now in its twenty-second year, is an opportunity for these individuals to present the outcomes of these overseas sojourns.

At the beginning, the exhibition was held at the Seiji Togo Memorial Yasuda Kasai Museum of Art (later the Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art, now the Sompo Museum of Art) in Shinjuku, Tokyo, but starting with the eleventh exhibition in 2008 it has been staged at he National Art Center, Tokyo, which opened in Roppongi in 2007, where it continues to function as a showcase for work by “up-and-coming new talent” befitting such a large exhibition venue. In 2015, “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow PLUS,” an exhibition with a strong curatorial focus held at relatively small spaces compared to those at the National Art Center, was launched with the aim of introducing artists of different ages (2015: Art Fair Tokyo, 3331 Arts Chiyoda; 2016: Kyoto Art Center; 2017: Hibiya Library and Museum).

Over the more than twenty-year history of the exhibition, not only have we seen a change in generation of the contributing artists, but we have also encountered social and natural upheavals both in Japan and overseas, including 9/11, the financial crisis of 2007-08, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the number of museums and international art festivals dealing with contemporary art has increased, and it has been an honor to see former participants represented at these institutions and events. With this in mind, to coincide with the reorganization of our website, we will be modifying it from a vehicle specializing in providing information on individual exhibitions and turning it into a support platform for emerging and mid-career artists under the name “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow.” In addition to information on the current year’s exhibition, it will include an archive of previous exhibitions. The “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition will soon be celebrating its 25th year. In the meantime, we will strive to improve the website’s functionality as an information resource on Japanese artists so that we can communicate information more effectively both in Japan and overseas.

We are committed to doing all we can to ensure the “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” exhibition continue to live up to people’s expectations.
Above all, we sincerely hope that this website and the exhibition become tools beckoning future generations of Overseas Study Program participants.
